Introduction
Serenoa repens, commonly known as saw palmetto or Sabal serrulatum, is a small palm, growing to a maximum height of around 2–3 m, endemic to the southeastern United States, most commonly along the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal plains. It is a hardy plant, extremely slow growing, and long lived, with some plants reaching the age of 500–700 years.
Saw palmetto fruit is best known for its use in decreasing symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) and prostate infections. It is also a remedy for colds and coughs, sore throat, asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and migraine. It is also used to increase urine flow (as a diuretic), to promote relaxation (as a sedative), and to enhance sexual drive (as an aphrodisiac).Beta sitosterol found in saw palmetto fruits is believed to reduce benign prostatic hyperplasia and blood cholesterol levels, it also improves athletic performance.
Function
