B vitamins In the United States
In the United States, B vitamins and multivitamins are the most popular supplements, mainly because B vitamins are essential for multiple functions of the human body. Supplementation with B vitamins can help to compensate for the lack of nutrients in the diet (especially vegetarian) and the difficulty of getting and absorbing from food, which is common in the elderly and in people who take stomach acid lowering drugs. But according to a recent test from ConsumerLab.com, many people who take B vitamins may actually consume far more than they need, or exceed their expectations, and what they claim on the supplement label. the amount.
Experiment on Vitamin B Supplements
Consumer Labs purchased and tested Group B multivitamins and single vitamin B, such as vitamin B6, B12, folic acid(including methyl folate), niacin, and popular biotin-containing hair and nail care formula (vitamin B7) ). Test results showed that 5 out of 26 vitamin supplements contained only 53% to 223% of the specific B vitamins listed. For example, a "hair, skin, and nail" formula was found to contain more than twice as much biotin as claimed, and a popular compound B vitamin was found to contain almost twice as much folate as claimed, more than every Daily tolerable intake.
Consumer laboratories also point out that many vitamin B supplements are “super” vitamins that deliberately exceed the recommended daily intake and, in some cases, even exceed the maximum tolerable intake. Although this is sometimes medically necessary, it can be worrying because long-term overdose of some B vitamins, such as vitamin B6, niacin and folic acid, may cause poisoning. High doses of vitamin B12 may cause acne or rosacea, while high doses of biotin may interfere with common laboratory tests, leading to misleading results. The FDA has reduced many recommended intakes of vitamin B in 2016, but these changes will not need to be reflected on the label until 2020 or later.
Among the products tested, the consumer laboratory selected the optimal product for each vitamin B based on the dose, quality and value of vitamin B.
A review of the new B vitamin supplements from consumer laboratories (including test results and comparisons for 34 products) can be found online. The consumer lab selected 26 products for testing, and the other 8 products were tested the same by CL's voluntary quality certification program.
Experimental Results and Analysis
The review summarizes the clinical efficacy and evidence of B vitamins, such as helping to prevent birth defects, lowering cholesterol levels, and slowing age-related cognitive decline. The report also explains important differences in B vitamins such as niacin (nicotinic acid, niacinamide and inositol niacin), folic acid (natural folic acid, folic acid and L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate), and vitamin B12 ( Methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin). It also discusses recent changes in vitamin B intake guidelines, as well as comparisons with vitamin B intakes commonly found in supplements, as well as safety and potential side effects and drug interactions.
